Report of Birth Abroad

Registering Overseas Births of US Citizens

When a child is born overseas to an American citizen parent, or parents, certain documentation is required in order for the child to be registered as an American citizen.  Once registered, the child can receive his/her “Report of US Birth Abroad” and a US passport can be issued.  The children can also apply for a Social Security number. 

For registration, the following items are necessary:

  • Original copy of the birth certificate issued by the local  authorities at the place of birth.
  • Original copy of marriage certificate of the child’s parents.
  • Original documentation of the termination of any previous marriages of the child’s parents (death or divorce certificates).
  • Parent(s)’ US passports or other evidence of US citizenship.
  • Completed application forms (forms will be sent to you after you request an appointment).
  • Two identical and recent photos taken full face with a light background (5cm x 5cm or 2”x2”).
  • USD$65 or equivalent for registration of the birth abroad AND
  • USD$82 for the US passport in cash or travelers checks.
